What Is Mundane Astrology?

Mundane astrology is the oldest branch of astrology. While natal astrology reads the chart of a person, mundane astrology reads the chart of a nation. Every country has a birth moment -- its independence, founding constitution, or regime establishment -- and that chart reveals the nation's destiny just as a birth chart reveals an individual's.

The word "mundane" comes from the Latin mundus, meaning "world." This is literally world astrology -- the astrology of nations, wars, economies, and political upheavals.

How National Charts Work

A national chart is cast for the exact moment a nation is "born." For India, that is August 15, 1947, at midnight in New Delhi. For the United States, it is July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia (the Sibly chart). For the Islamic Republic of Iran, April 1, 1979.

The 12 houses take on different meanings in mundane astrology:

Planets also shift meaning. The Sun becomes the head of state. The Moon represents the masses. Mars is the military. Jupiter is the judiciary and banking system. Saturn is infrastructure and democratic institutions.

The Five Domains of Geopolitical Prediction

3. Regime Change -- Government instability. Sun afflicted by Saturn or Rahu, the 10th lord in a dusthana, Rahu in the 10th -- these patterns precede coups, revolutions, and dramatic election outcomes.

4. Territory -- Border disputes and sovereignty. Ketu in the 4th house (separation from homeland), the 4th lord in the 12th (land lost to foreign powers).

5. Civil Unrest -- Internal instability. Moon afflicted by Mars or Rahu (public anger), malefics in the 4th house (homeland disturbance).
